Summary: We are seeking an experienced and entrepreneurial designer to join Black Bear's software team. The designer will be responsible for transforming our product roadmap into tangible features, experiences, and workflow improvements. Every step of the way, the designer will collaborate with our full-stack software engineers to design the custom platform we are currently building. The ideal candidate is a generalist with experience working in a startup or on small teams. They are energized by the freedom to innovate, and excel at crafting solutions from the ground up with minimal guidance. Commitment to understanding the business pipeline is essential for success in this role. Alongside the Product Manager, the designer will engage with all Black Bear team members to decipher existing workflows and propose new designs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work with the product manager to create wireframes, storyboards, and hi-fi drawings for new products and features
- Manage and conduct interviews with team members to understand existing workflows
- Collaborate with software team to determine product prioritization and timeline
- Design multiple solutions and conduct A/B testing with internal and external stakeholders
- Identify and help resolve workflow cobwebs and inefficiencies by designing better processes
- Standardizing inconsistent existing interfaces with modern design principles
- Design user interface for client platform
- Redesign user interface for existing software products
- Contribute to branding and marketing efforts for software team and Black Bear team at large
Preferred Experience and Skills:
- Experience creating UX/UI design, working directly with engineers in small, collaborative teams; startup experience preferred
- Strong communication skills and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable information
- Comfort with ambiguity and a “figure it out” attitude
- Experience creating cohesive design systems that can be applied across existing software products, with demonstrated ability to audit and standardize inconsistent interfaces
- Knowledge of modern design handoff tools, such as Figma, and component-based design systems
- Portfolio showing successful B2B or enterprise software designs, particularly in energy, cleantech, construction, or similarly complex technical domains where data visualization and analytics are key components
- Experience overhauling and designing user workflows from scratch
- Knowledge of modern web technologies and responsive design principles
- Experience conducting user research and usability testing with business stakeholders and technical users, with ability to translate findings into design improvements
